Modern Home
Our clients wished to build a new single-family home in a community of established mid-century modern homes. They sought to create a home that is modern in appearance, supports a current/casual lifestyle and is a “good neighbor” relative to the scale of the surrounding ranch style homes.
The solution is a single-story home scaled to match the datum of its neighboring homes. Generous full height windows bring abundant natural light into the open plan living space and adjacent bedrooms. A 40-foot-long light well brings natural light to the living spaces located in the basement and is connected to the main floor via a generous stairwell. The stairwell also acts as a light chimney topped with four oversized skylights that contribute additional natural light to the lower-level spaces.
The planning is rational and consolidates much of the building infrastructure in a highly organized system that optimizes efficiency and minimizes cost. Highly efficient mechanical systems, eco-friendly building materials and a rooftop solar system also makes this home a good neighbor to the environment.
Timeless materials and restrained architectural detailing maintain a quiet and elegant backdrop for this family’s active lifestyle.
